Book Review: The Cutting

Updated: Dec 16, 2020

I started reading this book because my mom bought it for me. She knows I'm absolutely obsessed with Boston and its beauty, and so she bought me the book via Kindle. I also got the audiobook version from the library, and I can't say I enjoyed it enough to give it a five star rating, but there are a lot of things I have to say about it.

So let's get into it!

The beginning

The beginning of the book starts off strong, with lots of character detail, lots of background description in terms of the environment. But there's nothing sinister about it. It's a little predictable.

The main character, Mike McCabe, is a detective, and he's on a date with his girlfriend when he has to leave because of a new case. And then he gets to the crime cene. and all the other characters are introduced-the coroner, McCabe's partner, Maggie...

Overall, an okay start. I kept reading because I was thrilled with the description of the environment.

The middle

At this point, I already knew who the suspects for the murders were. TBH, McCabe gave it away as soon as he went to question the suspect, whose gender I don't want to reveal so I'll be using the pronouns "they" "them" and "their" to describe this character.

But yeah, I already suspected them to be involved/working with someone else. At this point, there has been more info fed to me about McCabe's other relationship-his daughter who is supposedly thirteen but seems to act nine sometimes and twenty-one other times; his girlfriend Kyra who comes into scenes to have sex with him or give him advice-or both one after the other. And of course, Maggie, the loyal friend and partner.

I was glad I listened to the audiobook, because if I hadn't, I would've DNF'd the book altogether.

The end

So, just like the beginning, a little predictable, but still well written. Not horrible, not worth giving the book as a whole less than three stars. But at the same time, I can't say I absolutely loved it.

I enjoyed the description; the writing was good, but the plot was so lackluster, and the characters were so... meh. So, been there, done that.

Conclusion

I would recommend The Cutting to someone who isn't into crime or mystery thriller novels. But for veterans of the genre, you might not enjoy it as much.

That's it for me! I know this review was a little shorter, but I thought I'd free write and try something different for once.

Catch you later!
