Book Review: Unfiltered by Lily Collins

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

I'm so glad you clicked on this post, and if you want to hear my thoughts on this book, let's get into it! First off, I really loved Lily's narration of the book. I listened to the audiobook version, and I found her voice soothing and clear with the narration.

I really related to a lot of the content related to self-discovery and gaining confidence. Something I love about the book is that Lily went back and forth between being truthful with herself and her readers about the negatives of her life-including her childhood-but she also pointed out the good. Even when she talked about romantic relationships, she seemed to think aloud, musing about why she'd stayed, or why she'd loved that person she was with so much, even if they weren't seeing her.

It has been a while since I read a non-fiction book, let alone a celebrity memoir, and Lily Collins' collection of essays really hit me in the heart. Her writing is beautiful. When she talked of cooking for her boyfriend, I saw her in the kitchen. When she talked of trips to the farmer's market with her mom., I saw that too.

It's amazing, the stuff that she's been through. Even when she talks about her eating disorder, you can tell how much thought has gone into the writing, to make sure she has told her story and explain her feelings, to look back, without sugarcoating things. She has clearly grown from it all, and you can tell from the way she talks about getting tattoos, to the last bit of the book where she's rounding up all the things she's talked about and tying everything together with a neat little bow.

She owned it.

It's really an inspiring read, and I'm so glad I picked it up!

All that being said, I gave this book 3 stars because I felt like this book was very focused on Lily's romantic relationships and not a lot on other things, like friendship or self-discovery. Some chapters had themes of self-discovery, but I wished it was more of Lily becoming the person she is within rather than a book about how her relationships affected her.
