Whether you're a beginner or a pro, having a steady set of makeup items that you can confidently repurchase is something that should be a priority. Things like skin type, skin issues, diet, and what type of look you're going for with your makeup are all things you should keep in mind when trying new products.
Personally, when I first started using makeup, I made a lot of mistakes. I didn't have any idea about cool tones vs. warm toned, and I just followed trends, rather than thinking about tailoring my look to my preferences.
But I am past that stage. So I thought it would be helpful to talk about my holy grails. You never know-maybe you'll find something that'll become a staple in your own collection!
Here we go!
Eyeshadow
Nabla Dreamy 2 palette
So the reason I initially wanted to try Nabla Cosmetics out was because of my favorite beauty YouTuber, Julia Adams. She bought the Secret palette (Check out her review here!) and she also did a full face of Nabla video and she seemed to enjoy their products, I wanted to get back into higher quality, a little more expensive than drugstore makeup, so I was kinda window shopping on Ulta, and I found the Dreamy 2 palette. At first, the perfectionist in me was like "Wait, I should try the FIRST Dreamy palette before I buy this one" but then I kept analyzing the shades and color story for Dreamy 2, and I even went and watched Nabla's video on the palette-it was a high-quality trailer, and I could get a good idea of the different formulas and how creative the brand had been with the palette. immediately fell in love because it just looked stunning.

I have to say, after using it for a while, I realized that I haven't had one day where I didn't like my eye look after using it. And I hadn't had such a positive experience with an eyeshadow palette since Colorpop's Going Coconuts palette. I was sure that I would become a drugstore eyeshadow palette kinda girl, but ever since Nabla came into my life, I decided that it was worth doing some research on the latest in indie brands.
Face Primer
Elf Jelly pop primer

I have little to say about this product. I bought it because JuicyJas on YouTube said that it was a dupe for the Milk Hydro Grip primer, and the Milk primer was something I wanted but really couldn't afford to spend $30 on. It's very similar in texture and how they work, so I bought it and I haven't used any other primer since then!
Foundation
Milani Screen Queen Foundation ($ )
Before I used this foundation, I hadn't yet established a skincare routine, so my skin went from bad, to worse, to okay. But I had wanted to get my skin to a stage where I wouldn't need a full coverage foundation to cover up my imperfections.

This foundation has been the best purchase I made since my skin cleared up. It is super lightweight, even though it is a little thick. I only use about one pump of it for all over my face, and I wait for it to sit for a while before deciding if I need another layer. Most days it covers up my acne like a medium coverage foundation would, but you can also use it in the summer as a light coverage foundation.
Powder
BareMinerals Mineral Veil Setting powder ( )

For people with oily skin, this powder would be a great choice. It's very lightweight, and you can get a small version of it on Sephora-I did that, and it lasted for soo long. I've had a long love-hate relationship with powder in general. When I first got into makeup, I just wanted to try all the products that people on YouTube were mentioning, and so my hunt for a powder ended up being an on and off thing, since I didn't think about my skin type at all.
Blush
BH cosmetics Chocolate Marshmallow Truffle blush palette ( )

I really love this four blush palette because it feels like there's a shade for both summer and fall, my favorite seasons. There are two darker brown shades I don't like, but I use the light peachy tone a lot, and the berry tone sometimes.
Highlighter
Soph x Makeup Revolution Highlighter palette ( )

I started watching SophDoesLife (formerly SophDoesNails) when I started getting into makeup. She has really in-depth reviews, wear tests, and honest makeup reviews. I rarely buy influencer products, but Soph is different, and I have used no other highlighter other than the ones in this palette.
So, what are your current holy grails? Did you find any new ones in 2020? Let me know in the comments below!
